Tupac Amaru Shakur, alias 2 Pac, naît le 16 juin 1971 à New York aux Etats-Unis. A 17 ans, il déménage à Marin City en Californie. Il devient roadie et danceur du collectif Digital Underground puis enregistre son premier album 2pacalypse now en 1992. Le titre Brenda's got a baby connaît un grand succès. Le rappeur joue dans le film Juice d'Ernest Dickerson puis dans Poetic Justice de John Singleton. En 1993, il signe Strickly 4 my N.IG.G.A.Z. qui contient les hits singles I get around et Keep ya head up. Parallèlement, 2 Pac accumule les démêlés avec la justice pour coups et blessures et même abus sexuel en 1994. Reconnu coupable, il est condamné à quatre ans et demi de prison en 1995 et échappe à une fusillade à New York. Alors qu'il est incarcéré, son troisième album Me against the world paraît. 2 Pac sort de prison grâce à une caution de 1,4 million de dollars avancée par le président de Death Row Records. Il enregistre en 1996 pour cette maison de disques l'album All eyez on me qui contient le hit California love en duo avec Dr Dre. En septembre 1996, 2 Pac est assassiné à Las Vegas. La rumeur voudrait que Notorious B.I.G. ait commandité le meurtre, 2 Pac ayant déclaré avoir couché avec sa femme Faith Evans. Des albums posthumes suivent dont Don Killuminati : the 7 day theory, Still I rise et Tupac Amaru et Until the End Of Time en 2001. En 2002 parait Better Dayz, un double album avec vingt titres inédits. Suit The Prophet en 2003.

En 2001, D-12 enregistre son premier album Devil's Night chez Interscope/Shady Records, qui, dès sa sortie, commence à faire des vagues avec le single Shit On You. Avril 2004: le groupe revient avec D12 World.
